Courtney C. Atkinson represents businesses, employers and individuals in litigation matters and also provides general advice and counsel on a wide variety of legal issues. She is certified as a mediator and also conducts third-party investigations for businesses, employers and educational institutions.

Ms. Atkinson is an experienced employment attorney, advising on all aspects of employment law, including non-compete agreements, employee handbooks, employment policies, prevention of claims of discrimination and harassment, unemployment benefits and other human resource matters.  In the course of her employment practice, she has represented employers and employees in actions both in federal and state court, as well as before various federal and state agencies, including the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the South Carolina Human Affairs Commission (SCHAC), the Department of Employment and Workforce (DEW) and the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA). Her employment practice also routinely involves investigations into workplace discrimination, harassment and retaliation.

Outside of her employment practice, Ms. Atkinson is also an experienced litigator with experience in general business litigation, healthcare liability matters, products liability, intellectual property litigation, personal injury, probate matters and premises liability matters.  For several years she represented a large international retailer in various types of matters pending in both federal and state court. 

Ms. Atkinson is also an experienced family attorney who represents individuals in various types of domestic matters, including divorces, both contested and uncontested, as well as in custody, alimony and visitation matters.  Ms. Atkinson also routinely advises clients on prenuptial and postnuptial agreements.

Ms. Atkinson also has experience working in Title IX matters, specifically in regard to allegations of sexual misconduct on college and university campuses. Her experience in Title IX matters includes conducting investigations on behalf of colleges and universities, as well as the representation of individuals in Title IX proceedings and hearings.

A Greenville native, Ms. Atkinson is very active in the local community.  She is a graduate of Leadership Greenville - Class 35 and was named by Greenville Magazine as one of the “Best and Brightest 35 & Under” in 2006.  She is currently the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the South Carolina Children’s Theatre, a member of the Jasmine Road Board of Directors, and a member of the Greenville County Bar Association’s Executive Committee. She was previously appointed by Greenville City Council to serve two terms on the City’s Accommodations Tax Advisory Committee and also served as the President of the Greenville County Bar Association and as the President of the Junior League of Greenville.   She has also previously served with the United Way of Greenville County as a member of the Womens’ Leadership Council and as Chair of the Women Attorneys Committee, and also previously served on the Greenville Hospital System’s Children’s Hospital Development Advisory Council. 

Ms. Atkinson graduated from the University of Georgia, cum laude, in 2000 with a B.A. degree in political science.  She earned her law degree in 2003 from the Washington & Lee University School of Law, where she served as a member of the Moot Court Executive Board, the Alderson Prison Clinic, and the Community Legal Practice Clinic.
